Orienteering Route for Gillingham
Published: 14 October 2020
New orienteering course unveiled in Gillingham.
A new free to use public orienteering course has been created for Gillingham, linking urban and rural green spaces and parks. Official launch of the course is Thursday 15th October 2020.
Families are invited to use the course and have a go at orienteering, find as many markers as they can and learn some basic navigation skills.
People who want to try out the course can borrow a map from the library or Waitrose.
The map can also be downloaded from Gillingham Town Council’s web site:
gillinghamdorset-tc.gov.uk
or Wimborne Orienteers’ website: wimborne-orienteers.co.uk.
People can walk or run the course at their own pace or make it competitive to see who can find all the points and finish first between family and friends. The orienteering course is an opportunity to create some healthy competition or have a relaxed stroll while finding the markers, like a treasure hunt.
Public Health Dorset said:
“We are always looking at ways in which we can work with partner organisations and communities to create opportunities to improve the health and wellbeing of residents. This is a great example of everyone working together.”
Mayor of Gillingham said:
“This is a fabulous addition to the many things on offer here in Gillingham for our residents’ wellbeing. It will also hopefully become something that will attract people to come to our town. I am very proud that Gillingham has been chosen for this project.”
We encourage as many people as possible to come and have a go in groups of no more than 6 (unless a larger family bubble) as the course is outdoors and social distancing is easily manageable. Each participant is responsible for maintaining their own social distance for the protection of themselves and others.
The course is permanent, so people can complete the routes as many times as they like and hopefully improve their finish times each visit.
