A message for parish and town councils from the PCC, David Sidwick:
Dear colleagues,
I am pleased to announce, following a one-year trial of road safety signage across North Dorset funded by my Office, the option to use the signs across the Dorset County area has been made possible thanks to the cooperation of Dorset Council.
Working alongside Dorset Council, several vivid ‘Please Slow Down’ signs will remain in North Dorset, with more being considered at strategic sites along roads where issues around speeding are causing concern.
The signs act as a very visual reminder to drivers to watch their speed, especially through small villages. The signs make motorists think about the speed they are driving at and question whether they concentrate fully on how they are driving on Dorset’s roads.
I know from conversations with residents who live in more rural locations that enhancing road safety is a real priority for them - so I’m really pleased to be able to widen this initiative out to other areas across the Dorset Council area.
Dorset has an excellent Community Speed Watch scheme with 1,272 dedicated members, while Dorset Police and Dorset Council’s Road Safety Teams also work tirelessly to keep us all safe and take dangerous drivers off our roads. However, they cannot be everywhere, and the signs will help remind drivers to watch their speed and be mindful of the consequences.
If residents within the Dorset Council area want a sign erected locally to help stop speeding, they should contact their local Parish/Town Council or local Dorset Council Ward Member in the first instance, who can then liaise with Dorset Council’s Road Safety Team.
Kind regards,
Dave
