Prestigious Green Flag Awards for Gillingham

Gillingham’s public green spaces earn prestigious Green Flag Award.

Gillingham is celebrating a fantastic achievement this year, with three of its public green spaces proudly raising the prestigious Green Flag Award after the town secured the internationally recognised quality mark for parks and gardens for the tenth consecutive year.

The public green spaces at The Stours, The Lodden and The Shreen in Gillingham have proudly secured a coveted Green Flag Award, placing them among just 2,391 award-winning parks and green spaces across the UK. This prestigious recognition celebrates the outstanding dedication, expertise and passion of the team who work tirelessly to keep these much-loved spaces looking their very best. Their commitment not only provides beautiful, welcoming places for residents and visitors to enjoy year-round, but also plays a vital role in supporting wildlife, enhancing biodiversity and helping nature thrive.

Paul Todd MBE, Green Flag Award Manager at Keep Britain Tidy, said: “Gillingham has shown what can be achieved when public green spaces are properly supported and managed. As we celebrate 30 years of the Green Flag Award, we want every community to have access to green spaces like this that are safe, welcoming and maintained to a high standard.”

Mayor of Gillingham, Councillor Donna Toye, congratulated everyone involved, saying: “This wonderful achievement builds on a decade of Green Flag success and is a testament to the hard work, dedication and passion of Gillingham Town Council’s Grounds Team, alongside the invaluable support of the volunteers from the Gillingham Action for Nature Group. Their commitment has helped create and maintain beautiful, welcoming green spaces that our whole community can be proud of. This is a fantastic achievement and a proud moment for our town."

The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under contract from the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of green spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.
